Ask Molly

Dear Molly,

I have a terribly embarrassing problem. When I sniff the ground, my ears hang so low that I frequently step on them.  I can handle the pain, but I fear that the poodle next door is laughing at me.

Please help,

Norbert the Bloodhound

Dear Norbert,
Do your ears hang low? Do they wobble to and fro? Can you tie them in a knot? Can you tie them in a bow?

You could pull your ears back into a pony tail, but that would probably be even more embarrassing.
You have an important and potentially dangerous job patrolling the neighborhood. SQRLs and gophers are everywhere.

Hold your head high and be proud. You are upholding the noble reputation of the bloodhound. A pinched ear is the price that heroes such as us sometimes have to pay.

With a proud salute,
Molly

News Flash

Dear Readers,

Excitement, excitement!

Some are born great, and some have greatness thrust upon them. So it was with my human, Tom -  the greatness thrust upon him bit. I'm your roving reporter, Molly the Border Collie, with the complete story.

It was a day like any other, blue skies and lots of running room through meadows that smelled of sweet grass after a monster storm. And then we saw it - an ancient maple had fallen across the Peanuts R You shack, a famous landmark of Cape Sanduski, Oregon, crushing that venerable establishment. My human and I were on patrol and reported what we saw. The Sanduski locals, who are hard-working humans, went to work, removing the tree from the remains of the building.  But there was fierce crying inside. A baby had been left alone under the floorboards, a newborn, begging for milk and his mama.

Without thought for his own safety, my human crashed through the debris  and rescued Flor. Since we were unable to locate Flor's mother, Tom took it upon himself to care for the babe. The vet recommended feeding Flor kitten food mixed into goats milk. He/she gets fed every three hours.  Mother Father and baby are both doing fine.

We dogs were given strict instructions that Flor was not for eating, no matter what our instincts told us.

Human's note: A baby skunk opens its eyes at three weeks. That's also the age at which skunks can spray.
